Journal 4 - Web 2.0 Evaluation of Google Earth (NETS 1, 3, 5)

I used Classroom 2.0 a collaborative website to follow threads on applications of Google Earth. for classrooms. In the journal response below I have explained Google Earth and noted what I learned from following these threads posted by teachers. I also read similar journal entries posted by other classmates and learned about other web 2.0 tools used in the classroom. In doing this assignment I engaged in a global learning community to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning (NETS 5). I also demonstrated collaboration with peers using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation (NETS 3). I have learned the Google Earth is a strong web 2.0 tool that can be used to explore real-world issues and to solve authentic problems using digital tools.

Google Earth is a free download that allows you to explore everything from the constellations n the sky to that random car parked in front of your house. You begin navigating by moving your mouse across a virtual globe, zoom down to specific locations, or enter in longitude and latitude coordinates or even pre-programed tours. The possibilities are endless for exploration and learning while the program itself is user firendly. Google earth alows you to dive under the ocean surface, peer back into history, observe the shadow of the sun on the earth's surface at any time, peek at erupting volcanoes, and see 360 degree panoramics of the grand cnyon or the south American rainfoest. nationl Geograhic, New York TImes and even YouTube hve conributed to the Google Earth experiance with informtion on history, news issues and phot safaris.

Google Earth is a wonderful tool to support curiculum in the classroom. I am following discussions on Classroom 2.0 threads on the many cross curricular uses of Google Earth. The key point that I learned from following the threads is that this tool can be used on many different levels and can connect different subject areas and lesson objectives.
